Confectionery Serves Sweet Nostalgia

There’s something new and delicious on the horizon for your Valentine’s shopping this year. The recently reopened
Shane Confectionery, at 110 Market Street, welcomes visitors with more than 300 varieties of hand-crafted candy. Much of it is made with vintage machinery housed on the upper floors of the premises.
Champagne-flavored chocolates, chocolate-covered handmade marshmallows, and hazelnut milk chocolates are among the current Valentine’s favorites, according to candy clerk Lindsay Yurcaba. This week, chocolate-dipped strawberries also became available.
Located in the heart of Philadelphia’s historic district, the store has been a site for the candy business since 1863, and had been owned and operated by the Shane family since 1911. Brothers Ryan and Eric Berley purchased the shop and the Shane family’s recipes after Barry Shane retired in 2010, and have lovingly recreated a confectionery of a bygone era.
