Neighbor to Neighbor
Through a special Neighbor to Neighbor initiative, Journey’s Way has been providing ongoing assistance to older residents in Roxborough, Manayunk, East Falls and surrounding areas. These residents are often on fixed incomes, and often do not have the support to take care of things in their home environment.
In an attempt to keep our older neighbors safe and secure in their homes, Journey’s Way pairs the extensive health and social service support of the Center, Adult Day Services Center, and Geriatric Counseling Program, with outreach and volunteer support. When neighbors contact us, we are able to assess and provide linkages to the array of benefits and services available as well as to volunteer services supported through Journey’s Way. Our caring, dedicated volunteers provide ongoing and episodic help to our neighbors aging in place in their homes.
Some of the assistance includes:
- Chores like yard work, fix-up
- Replacing hard to reach bulbs, smoke detectors and other home assistance
- Rides to medical appointments for people who have no other alternatives
- Friendly phone calls and visits to people who are isolated.
Supplementing the ongoing work activities are fall, spring, and summer workdays that Journey’s Way has also organized to assist older residents. Groups of volunteers get homes ready for the cold or the heat, do safety checks, rake leaves, clear debris or other general maintenance.
