Many older adults are not ready to retire at age 65. Assistance for job-seekers age 55 and older is available through a variety of programs. Older adults who would like to pursue paid employment can also benefit from career counseling programs tailored to their specific needs.

Volunteer Opportunities
Retirement is a great time to explore your interests, and to get involved in activities you didn't have time for while you were working; and there are many ways to get involved, among them: 

Senior community centers: they're not just great places to socialize; they also offer many volunteer opportunities. Income-eligible seniors may participate in part-time, federally-subsidized volunteer programs, such as Senior Companions, that pay them a small stipend to promote the welfare of homebound seniors. Others may help in the computer center,  participate in a "Neighbor to Neighbor" program, or assist with special events.  Click here for a list of senior centers .

RSVP (Retired Senior and Volunteer Program): helps individuals age 55+ find the volunteer opportunity that’s right for them. RSVP volunteers serve for at least two hours and up to 40 hours a week.  They may tutor and mentor children and adults, distribute meals to those in need, teach computer skills, speak on environmental issues or work in museums.  They are placed in service projects in schools, hospitals, senior centers, and other community service organizations.  Volunteers receive in-service instruction and supervision.  They also receive supplemental insurance, educational and training opportunities. Temple University's Center for Intergenerational Learning: offers a wide range of opportunities for older adults. They serve as literacy tutors, mentors, parent outreach workers, oral historians, after-school volunteers, and child care aides. They provide in-home support to: teen mothers, parents who have been reported for child abuse and neglect, families caring for children with disabilities and chronic illnesses, and grandparents raising grandchildren.  More

Temple's "Coming of Age" initiative: provides information about volunteer opportunities throughout the community, in addition to the programs operated through the Center. An e-newsletter offers weekly updates. More
